Alaska Railroad Wrecking Crane
292
Built 1984 by Pettibone Corporation,
Chicago, IL.
While normally railroad cars and locomotives remain on (or at least very close to) the track, occasionally the inevitable derailment does occur and the 292 is called out. Traditionally railroad wrecking cranes have been designed to run on railroad track. The 292 can run on the rails, but it can run even better on the highway. The highway capability permits it to access either end of a derailment even if the main track is blocked. Cleaning up derailments is a labor intensive task. The 292's cab accommodates four men in comfort from the scene of the derailment. Note: Its capacity is just adequate
for the best of conditions for four axle equipment (263,000 pounds) and
totally insufficient for six axle equipment (SD70MACs weigh over 200,000
pounds per end). The ARRC recently acquired two used side boom equipped
cats (originally built for pipe laying) for lifting its SD70MACs.
