Welcome to John's Alaska Railroad Web Page!
I fell in love with the Alaska Railroad (ARR) after my wife and I rode it in the summer of 1986. We rode from the Anchorage station to Denali National Park where we backpacked and camped for several days. We returned to Anchorage with a long stop due to Federal Hours of Service Law. The crew had worked its 12 hour shift and a new crew had to be sent in. Not long after returning to my home in Ohio, I began modeling a 12' x 16' ARR HO layout in my basement. In 2018 I began working on a 16 'x 26' layout in a room over the garage.
This is an unofficial Alaska Railroad web site. For the official site click here or to make passenger reservations click here.

Another couple of steps closer! - 11/3/24

Saturday, October 26, was a beautiful, sunny, and cloud free 35-degree day. Pushing the season to the absolute end, 557 was rolled outside for the first time in two years. With the weather and locomotive gods conspiring in our favor, we can now check two more items off of the punch list. The crew removed the washout plugs and has washed the interior of the boiler to remove any assembly trash in preparation for the first fire-up. With a borrowed boom truck on site, the crew finished the day by also replacing the cab, which had been removed for full access to the boiler for the hydro test. To quote our host, John Combs, "Holy crap! Things are getting real!”

2025 annual print - 11/1/24

Exciting news from the Alaska Railroad! "We're thrilled to announce the release of our 2025 annual print, created by the talented artist Scott Clendaniel! Mark your calendars for January 2025. Scott will be signing prints in Anchorage and Fairbanks, and you'll have the chance to meet him in person! Titled Alaska Railroad Buddies, this year's artwork captures four beloved Alaskan animals enjoying a ride aboard a GoldStar coach, taking in breathtaking views of Denali and the caboose through the dome windows. Scott describes the piece as "realistically but comically" depicting these friendly animals, like human tourists, savoring the journey and making memories. Come celebrate this masterpiece with us and take home a piece of Alaska magic!"
