Winter Wonderland Another frame from this stunning morning when the Alaska Railroad decided to dispatch their "snow fleet" work extra consisting two GP40-2s pushing Harsco/Jordan Spreader 9 south to Portage to begin opening up the railroad to Seward. The southern end of the ARR's mainline had been out of service for months since the last coal train ran but was being prepped for some barge arrivals and lumber trains north from Seward later in the month. While there is no snow to move here down beside Turnagain Arm, in about 25 miles they will be deep into it cleaning the pass through the Kenai Mountains over Grandview Summit. This was a perfect day trackside with my great friend and fellow FLICKR member Frank Keller. MP 81 - Kenai Subdivision Mainline |
